Hawaii’s Moana Surfrider completes first phase of reno

Waikiki’s Moana Surfrider, a Westin Resort and Spa, has completed the first phase of a comprehensive renewal in advance of the hotel’s 125th anniversary in 2026.

The resort's refreshed lobby debuted earlier this month while the Tower Wing just began welcoming guests to its renovated rooms. Full completion of the Tower rooms is scheduled for late August.

"We are honoring the Moana Surfrider's timeless legacy by illuminating architectural details and incorporating refined materials," Thomas Foti, Biplex general manager, Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort and Spa, and Sheraton Princess Kaiulani, said in a statement. "The renovated Tower Wing and historic lobby beautifully capture this vision, offering guests distinctly curated environments that are welcoming, restorative and undeniably luxurious."

Design Details

The front desk now has check-in pods and a sculptural lighting fixture inspired by the courtyard's tree, which is on the National Register of Historic Trees. The hotel’s lobby has been refreshed with an aesthetic designed to honor its storied Victorian architecture.

Curved seating vignettes and accent tables are designed to play off the ceiling's curved chandelier fixtures. Notable upgrades include newly refinished original wood flooring, custom-designed transitional furnishings and bespoke art pieces incorporating botanical elements of the hotel's Banyan tree.

The reimagined guestrooms and suites in the Tower Wing are designed to showcase clean, rhythmic patterns, warm metallic accents and a calming palette reflecting the shades of Waikiki's ocean views. Tower Wing guestrooms—available in either a king bed or a new two-queen bed configuration—include curved banquette seating areas, integrated workspaces, a custom-designed reading area and a refreshment station with a coffee maker and mini refrigerator. Lanais (balconies) are equipped with new residential-style lounge furniture.

Tower Wing oceanfront one-bedroom suites feature living rooms with a dining table for four guests, wet bar, seating area and entertainment center with a flat-screen television and a carved work station. In addition, the Tower Wing's Suites offer lanais designed to extend the entertainment spaces and offer views of the city and the ocean.
