Newly-converted Bay Shores Peninsula Hotel opens

The Bay Shores Peninsula Hotel has opened on Newport Beach’s Balboa Peninsula following a full transformation.

Operated by Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based Pacifica Hotels, the 25-room property was converted from a 1960s California surf motel and blends mid-century influences with contemporary coastal design. The redesign was led by CPD Studio, a Southern California–based interior design firm known for its coastal projects.

“We wanted Bay Shores to feel like a love letter to Newport, a place that nods to its past while embracing the creativity and ease of today’s California lifestyle,” Blake Marriott, owner of the Bay Shores Peninsula Hotel, said in a statement. “Our vision was to create a space that captures the character of the Peninsula, where guests can truly feel the energy of the coast.”

Each guestroom incorporates mid-century silhouettes, striped wallpaper, gingham upholstery and custom oak furnishings. Local photography by Mariah Brink and hand-crafted lighting by Robert Gordon are designed to create a layered aesthetic. Guestrooms include Bellino Italian linens, robes by LA designer Simone Fan and Kiehl’s bath amenities. Sustainable features include refillable glass carafes and compostable containers.

In the lobby, the design integrates marble floors, arched details, pastel tones and brass accents. A curved oak reception desk and marble café bar look to achieve a refined yet approachable coastal feel.

Two rooftop spaces, known as The Penny and The Pearl, offer views of the harbor and coastline. The rooftops are used for yoga, lounging and small gatherings with fireplaces and seating designed to encourage casual, open-air relaxation. The hotel also operates an all-day café serving Coffee Manufactory espresso, pastries from Crema Artisan Bakery and Mediterranean-inspired light fare.
